Best insight on USA’s AI Stargate Project. The What, Why and If!

AI startgate project

They are really investing $500 Billion in AI. Yes, that’s right, FIVE HUNDRED BILLION with a ‘B’!  The AI stargate Project, at least on paper, looks like a massive upliftment for the USA’s AI Domination Dream, with endorsement from Tech and Financial biggies like OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle and MGX. Jointly, they will invest $100 billion immediately and focus on AI infrastructure including Data Centers, computing proficiency and energy sufficiency.

Why is the AI Stargate Project required for the USA?

There is no denying that Artification intelligence is here, and here to stay. Within three years, the whole talk has gone from “Hey, this can write decent articles for my blog” to “How long before this will take over the world?” Artificial Intelligence can now not just write editorial-grade articles, but can make images, create videos, compose music, do code and even converse like a human. The world is moving to a point where almost everything in the world will be controlled by Artificial Intelligence one way or the other, reaching the pinnacle of Internet excellence that started less than 3 decades ago. Anyone who can control AI or atleast a large part of its computing power, can most likely control the whole world!

This is where the AI Stargate Project takes prominence. While the USA is currently the leader in Artificial Intelligence, recent developments from the east, especially China, shows rifts in the claim. Chinese platforms like DeepSeek are performing the same or even higher in AI benchmarks, with fraction of the cost as compared to well-established US AI giants like OpenAI, Gemini and Grok. It also shows how these technologies are slowly in development under the public radar and how oblivious we are to it.

Taking an “AI will take its course” attitude will not just hamper the US economy but it is a real threat to US National security! This is where investment in the line of billions is required, to increase ‘demanding’ AI infrastructure and be the go-to place for the rest of the world to access AI computing. If we are slow to act, it is then better to not act at all!

Did we just hear ‘US National Security’?

ai intelligence for defence

Have you ever wondered why AI is so good to code? The reason is not a mere chance. AI needs data to be primed, and as engineers working on them needed their work to be faster and easier, elaborate and complex codes were one of the first things that it was taught. This resulted in an AI Super-engineer who had all the coding skills at its disposal and the power to not just create but also break.

While AI can do complex coding problems for software engineers, a powerful one can just as well be used to break large defence systems and take control of weapons of mass-destruction. Thus, developing an AI infrastructure that is much better than the AI that is trying to break it then becomes pivotal for the USA or any country to strengthen their National Security and prevent the world going into World War III.

Stargate Project- Will it benefit US citizens or Indians?

For any investment of this scale, there will be multiple beneficiaries both horizontally and vertically. While the tech companies themself are benefited with higher AI capabilities, there would also be large workforce requirements as well as vendors to supply the requisite infrastructure. If the USA cannot cater to such a large workforce demand, high-skilled workforce from countries like India might need to be brought in. Thus who will ultimately benefit from the employment creation needs to be seen.

Perhaps a beneficiary that is little less talked about are the power generation companies. Each Data Centers that are planned would require power equivalent to a small town in itself. This would mean these centers will be positioned next to provinces with ample energy sources or places with cheaper energy such as nuclear power stations. The rise in stocks of nuclear power companies is a good indicator of the vast potential AI brings to that sector.

Do they have money to fund Stargate?

While the investment in itself is welcome, whether the companies involved in the AI Stargate Project have the funds to backup such a massive scale needs to be asked. The US Government has already announced that all the funding for the project will be private. It needs to be understood how the initial $100 billion would be funded, before going into talks of the $400 billion expected after it .

On the flipside, if indeed such a large investment goes through, it means that the project partners are anticipating sufficient avenues in the near future to recover at least a part of their funding. This may be through the interest shown by corporate giants, especially in Tech, Finance and Pharma industry, as well as Government and defence organisations.

Can we trust Sam Altman to see this through?

I’ve had my reservations about Sam Altman since he moved OpenAI to ‘ClosedAI’. A founder who couldn’t even stay true to the company’s name and purpose, and preferred the glitter of gold could never be entrusted with something that could potentially lead to the end of the world or the beginning of a new one.  As we recollect, the original mission of OpenAi was to be a non-profit that ensures artificial general intelligence (AGI) would benefit humanity, rooted in open-source development, transparency, and shared research. Now its policies are like any other tech giant, CLOSED AND VAGUE!

Even keeping this factor aside, currently Sam Altman has only led one great product (ChatGPT) with the help of many independent creators, which later was closed off to them. Other products like Sora and Dalle-E, are either in development or strangled by better competition.

Many would also then argue who else is there to lead a project at his scale? While my antipathy to Sam Altman has rejected him, the truth is that the current crop of tech billionaires, most of the AI entrepreneurs and definitely the US government cannot be trusted with the project either. For lack of any other, entrusting a $500 billion project to Uncle Sam is thus not only be a real test of his mettle but may be a very costly throw of the dice.

China is creating better AIs at much less cost? Is Stargate dead before it even started?

red ai wormhole

The Chineses have made quite a remarkable achievement with projects like DeepSeek and Tencent’s Hunyuan, which is tested by many to be as good or even better in some aspects to those made in the US. This has led to claims that AI development may not be as infrastructure-heavy as previously thought. However, that doesn’t mean complex AI systems can be made and run on a shoe-string budget. There is significant investment that is required for any country aiming to be the go-to hub for AI, and even China, for all its claims of AI cost-effectiveness, have recently bought out a one trillion Yuan “AI Industry Development Action Plan”. The Action plan, amounting to $136 billion in funds in today’s exchange rates, is similar to Stargate and hopes to build leading infrastructure and innovation hubs for artificial intelligence within China.

Stargate is thus not necessarily dead and there is a long time before we can reach a conclusion on whether the project becomes a success or not. As an AI aficionado, I am all for large investments and competition in Artificial intelligence. This will mean that not just one country will dominate the AI-arms-race, and development in both sides will be kept in check through proper global protocols and safety agencies. Consumers will also get better AI systems that are generally safer at more economical cost.

Will Stargate lead to a Skynet (Artificial General Superintelligence System)

ai skynet stargate uprising in city

Whoever came up with or saw the name ‘Stargate’ would have thought in depth about its semblance with ‘Skynet’ from the Transformers series, and said LET’S KEEP IT!

Whatever AI we have today, at least in the known spheres, is a narrow AI designed for specific AI related tasks. A broader or ‘general’ AI would have the capabilities to think for itself, make decisions and even understand feelings. This is seen by many as the final destination for AI development.

With over 700 billion dollars of AI development planned across the world, the Artificial General Superintelligence System might only be a question of ‘when’ and not ‘if’.This is especially true for areas where defence and security partnerships are expected. It would be wise for the world to collectively bring out an AI development strategy and safety initiative such as Global AI Risks Initiative or even EU’s AI act, where no one country gains or losses in AI initiatives over the other while still promoting AI development.
